In 1979 Trish Handley of the Inquiry, described 'resettlement' (or rather forced removals) as "... another euphemism for the forced eviction and relocation of the black inhabitants of South Africa who do not have Section 10 rights under the Bantu Urban Ares Consolidation Act of 1945 and its amendments. Basically the idea is to keep within the Republic only as many blacks as are required for the labour needs of white South Africa, and to remove the old, unemployed, unfit ...". A number of resettlements took place, recognized today as an indictment to the basic rights of South Africans alike. These image collections tell the terrible story of forced evictions in the then eastern part of the Cape Province.
