- Description: The ground state electronic absorption spectra, photophysics and photochemistry of amphiphilic octaglucosylated zinc phthalocyanines containing oxygen or sulfur bridges are presented. Triplet quantum yield values for the two dyes (in DMF and DMSO) vary between 0.71 and 0.84, while singlet quantum yield values lie between 0.63 and 0.75. Fluorescence lifetimes were determined experimentally by time correlated single photon counting and semi-empirically by fluorescence quenching techniques; and values from both methods were within the same range. Kinetic data were obtained for the quenching of the triplet state of the phthalocyanines by ground state molecular oxygen; the bimolecular collisional quenching rate constant range between 2.35 × 108 and 1.13 × 109 M-1.s-1. These values suggest that triplet states of the dyes are effectively quenched by ground molecular oxygen.

- Description: The syntheses and spectral, photophysical and photochemical properties of some zinc phthalocyanine derivatives – {2, (3)-tetra(quinoxalinyl)phthalocyaninato zinc(II), (β-ZnPc) and 1, (4)-tetra(quinoxalinyl)phthalocyaninato zinc(II), (α-ZnPc)} – are presented. The β-substituted complex is more fluorescent and exhibits lower tendencies to undergo intersystem crossing than its α-substituted counterpart, as judged by the former's higher fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF) and lower triplet quantum yield (ΦT) than the latter's in three solvents (DMSO, DMF and toluene). Singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ) values show the same trends as ΦT values. The differences in the spectral and photophysical properties of α-ZnPc and β-ZnPc are partly attributed to greater molecular distortions in the former. Studies of the interaction of the triplet states of α-ZnPc and β-ZnPc with triplet oxygen showed that α-ZnPc is more vulnerable to oxygen quenching than β-ZnPc. Also, the smallest quenching rate constants were observed in DMSO, which is attributed to the higher viscosity of DMSO than DMF and toluene.

- Description: The syntheses, characterization and fluorescence studies of several {octakis(alkylthio)phthalocyanato} palladium(II) and nickel(II) complexes are presented. The absorption spectra of some of the complexes showed extra peaks which are attributable to non-planar distortion, the extent of which, was found to dependent on alkyl chain length. The fluorescence excitation spectra of the nickel(II) derivatives were not in agreement with their absorption spectra, owing to structural changes upon excitation. Fluorescence quantum yields were very low (more than 1%) for all complexes as a consequence of the open-shell electronic structures of nickel(II) and palladium(II).

- Description: The syntheses and characterization of 2,3-octakis-(3-pyridyloxyphthalocyaninato) indium(III) and quaternized 2,3-octakis-(3-pyridyloxyphthalocyaninato) indium(III) are described. The ground state electronic absorption spectra, photophysics and photochemistry of both dyes in DMSO as well as that of the quaternized compound in aqueous solution are also presented. A comparison of the photophysical and photochemical parameters of the two dyes revealed that quaternized 2,3-octakis-(3-pyridyloxyphthalocyaninato) indium(III) was a better photosensitizer than its unquaternized counterpart. The quantum yield values of fluorescence (ΦF), triplet state formation (ΦT) and singlet oxygen formation (ΦΔ) for the cationic dye were found to be 0.03, 0.68 and 0.66 respectively in DMSO; these values were higher than those for 2,3-octakis-(3-pyridyloxyphthalocyaninato) indium(III), which exhibited values of 0.02, 0.66 and 0.63, respectively in DMSO. The values for the cationic dye in aq. solution were 0.02, 0.59 and 0.56 respectively, suggesting that the water-soluble quaternized 2,3-octakis-(3-pyridyloxyphthalocyaninato) indium(III) offers potential as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy treatment.

- Description: The synthesis and characterization of 2,9,16,23-chloro-3,10,17,24-triethyleneoxysulphanylphthalocyaninato zinc(II) (CTESZnPc) is described. The photophysics and photochemistry of CTESZnPc and those of tetrakis(triethyleneoxysulphanyl)zinc phthalocyanine (TTESZnPc) and octakis(triethyleneoxysulphanyl)zinc phthalocyanine (OTESZnPc), are presented and compared with those of unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc). The presence of triethyleneoxysulphanyl substituents on the ZnPc ring gave rise to higher values of singlet oxygen (ΦΔ) and photodegradation (ΦPd) quantum yields in DMF. However, TTESZnPc, OTESZnPc and CTESZnPc are less fluorescent than ZnPc, judging from their fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF) values. Fluorescence was lower in toluene than in DMF due to aggregation in the former solvent. Triplet quantum yield (ΦT) values were found to increase with the presence of substituents on the ZnPc ring, while triplet lifetimes (τT) were found to vary linearly with the logarithms of solvent viscosities. The fluorescences of the substituted ZnPc complexes were effectively quenched by benzoquinone (BQ), and the quenching data analyzed by the Stern–Volmer equation. The Stern–Volmer constants and the diffusion-controlled bimolecular rate constants were calculated.

Data for the fluorescence quenching of the complexes by benzoquinone (BQ) were treated using the Stern–Volmer analysis, and the quenching was found to follow a diffusion-controlled (dynamic) bimolecular mechanism. Theoretical values of bimolecular rate constant for complex-BQ interactions were determined using the Stokes–Einstein–Smoluchowski model; and the values, together with the Stern–Volmer quenching constants were used in calculating the fluorescence lifetimes of the complexes. The thermodynamics of the MPc-BQ interaction, in terms of solvent reorientation energy is also discussed.

- Description: This work reports on the microwave synthesis of tetrasulfonated tin phthalocyanine and tetrasulfonated tin α,β,γ-tetrabenzcorrole. The latter was only formed at low ratios (more than 1:8) of 4-sulfophthalic acid to urea. Both complexes are aggregated in aqueous media, but can be partly or fully disaggregated by the addition of Triton X-100. The α,β,γ-tetrabenzcorrole complex has lower triplet life times and yields, while the binding constant and quenching (of bovine serum albumin) constant are lower for α,β,γ-tetrabenzcorrole compared to tetrasulfonated tin phthalocyanine.

- Description: The syntheses of gallium(III) chloride phthalocyanine {(Cl)GaPc}, octaphenoxyphthalocyaninato gallium(III) chloride {(Cl)GaOPPc} and octakis(4-tert-butylphenoxy)phthalocyaninato gallium(III) chloride {(Cl)GaOTBPPc}; as well as their photophysical and photochemical parameters are hereby presented. Fluorescence quantum yields do not vary much among the three metallophthalocyanines (MPcs); therefore it was concluded that the effect of the substituents is not significant amongst (Cl)GaPc, (Cl)GaOPPc and (Cl)GaOTBPPc. Solvents effects, however, had an effect on the results. Triplet quantum yields were found to be lower in DMSO than in DMF and toluene. The rate constants for fluorescence, intersystem crossing and internal conversion as well as fluorescence and triplet lifetimes are reported. We have also reported photodegradation and singlet oxygen quantum yields. There was no clear correlation between the later parameters. It was, however, established that the three MPcs were stable.

- Description: The syntheses of novel tetra{2,(3)-pyridyloxyphthalocyaninato} complexes of zinc, cadmium and mercury (TPyZnPc, TPyCdPc and TPyHgPc) are presented. Their spectral and photophysical properties (as well as those of their unsubstituted counterparts: ZnPc, CdPc and HgPc) are investigated. TPyZnPc and TPyCdPc are aggregated in non-coordinating solvents such as chloroform, while TPyHgPc is demetallated, as evident from their respective absorption spectra. The trends in fluorescence (ΦF), triplet (ΦT) and singlet oxygen (ΦΔ) quantum yields are explained in terms of relative strengths of spin–orbit coupling induced by the respective central metal ions in the complexes. The effect of the pyridyloxy substituents is a decrease in ΦF and an increase in ΦT values. The complexes are less fluorescent in DMSO but possess higher ΦT, triplet lifetimes (τT) and ΦΔ therein.

- Description: The photophysical and photochemical properties and quenching (by 1,4-benzoquinone) of metallophthalocyanine sulfonates of aluminium (AlPcSmix), zinc (ZnPcSmix), silicon (SiPcSmix), germanium (GePcSmix) and tin (SnPcSmix) are presented. The quantum yield values of fluorescence (ΦF), triplet state (ΦT), singlet oxygen (ΦΔ) and photodegradation (Φd) were determined and the observed trends in their variation among the complexes discussed in terms of aggregation and the heavy atom effect. 1,4-benzoquinone effectively quenched the fluorescence of the complexes. Quenching analyses gave positive deviations from Stern-Volmer behavior, suggesting the existence of static quenching in addition to dynamic quenching. The static and dynamic components of the quenching were separated using a modified Stern-Volmer equation and the “sphere of action quenching model”. The quenching constant was found to be a function of the radius of the central metal ion.

- Description: The photophysical and photochemical parameters for mixed sulphonated metallophthalocyanine complexes (AlPcSmix, SiPcSmix, GePcSmix, SnPcSmix, and ZnPcSmix) are reported in phosphate buffer saline (PBS, pH 7.4), PBS containing the surfactant Triton X-100, and in dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO). The ground state spectra of SiPcSmix, GePcSmix and SnPcSmix show splitting of the Q-band in DMSO, but the fluorescence spectra have only one band, suggesting that only some components of the mixed complexes fluoresce. In general the quantum yields of fluorescence (ΦF) were smaller in DMSO compared to the aqueous solvents, while quantum yields of triplet state (ΦT) were larger in DMSO. Triplet lifetimes were much lower in aqueous solutions (compared to DMSO) due to the fact that water absorbs strongly around 1108 nm, which corresponds to the triplet energy of a metallophthalocyanine complex. The MPcSmix complexes quenched hydroquinone, and the Stern–Volmer constants follow the order: AlPcSmix > SiPcSmix > GePcSmix > ZnPcSmix > SnPcSmix which is the order of the extinction coefficients (of the low energy band for complexes with split Q-band) of these molecules. The rate constants for fluorescence, intersystem crossing, internal conversion, and photodegradation were determined from the hydroquinone quenching data.
